Spotlight on...
Nigeria

The national context: Nigeria

Nigeria is Africa's most populous country, and the 7th most populous country worldwide, with over 181 million residents. The average life expectancy is 55 years, the lowest in West Africa.  Agriculture is the largest sector of Nigeria's economy, employing two-thirds of the workforce. The national literacy rate is approximately 60%. In Oyo state, where INTREPID II is being conducted, nearly 30% of the population lives below the poverty line. Although English is the official language of the country, over 500 native languages are spoken in Nigeria, including Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo and Fula.
